Abstract – Intelligent Tutoring Systems are meant to provide individualised tutoring to students by adapting the teaching material to their specific needs and abilities. However, their development is a hard task and the endresult is difficult to evaluate. In this paper we present a novel approach for the evaluation of these systems, which relies on an agent that may be used as a simulated student-user. The evaluation agent incorporates modelling techniques of real users that are based on both cognitive and temperamental data. The cognitive model is based on cognitive psychology and simulates the memorisation and retention capabilities of a student. The temperamental data creates an image of the student concerning the way s/he behaves and the kind of personality s/he has. Developers may evaluate the tutoring systems using the Agent rather than real students. Thus better quality of the end result may be achieved at no cost of the educational process.

Feasibility of a Socially Intelligent Tutor

We present feasibility study of an intelligent tutoring system Peoplia in which a socially intelligent tutoring agent uses common instructional methods that are augmented by social features to help students learn. Peoplia features pseudo-tutor assessments, free-text answering, personalized question generation, and adaptive question selection. It allows students to work both individually and col...

Design of Virtual Tutoring Agents for a Virtual Biology Experiment

Virtual learning environments (VLEs) may possess many advantages over traditional teaching methods in skills training that offer empowerment of constructing the skills by freely exploring a VLE. However, a conflict between the free exploration and ensuring the learning tasks tackled emerges in the learning process. A strategy to balance the conflict is to employ virtual tutoring agents to scaff...

Simulation of Affective Student-Tutor Interaction for Affective Tutoring Systems: Design of Knowledge Structure

– Almost half a century intelligent tutoring systems have been developed towards imitating the learning process of a student and a tutor interaction in a one-to-one tutoring situation. However, the gap for this kind of systems still exists in showing the adaptation skills possessed by human-tutors, particularly, the systems lack emotional intelligence. The paper presents conceptual architecture...

Evaluating the Persona Effect of an Interface Agent in an Intelligent Tutoring System

This paper describes the evaluation of the persona effect of a speech-driven anthropomorphic agent that has been embodied in the interface of an Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS). This agent is responsible for guiding the student to the environment and communicating the system’s feedback messages. The agent was evaluated during an experiment in terms of the effect that it could have on students...

Evaluating the Impact of Interface Agents in an Intelligent Tutoring Systems Authoring Tool

This paper describes the evaluation of a speech-driven cartoon agent that has been embodied in the interface of a Web-based Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) authoring tool. The agent is mainly used in the student interface of the ITSs that are produced by the authoring tool and represents either a student or an instructor. The agent was evaluated during an experiment in terms of the effect t...
